{"id":73,"date":"2010-02-24T20:54:48","date_gmt":"2010-02-24T20:54:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.techivity.com\/?p=73"},"modified":"2010-02-24T20:54:48","modified_gmt":"2010-02-24T20:54:48","slug":"linking-wordpress-facebook-pages-and-twitter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.techivity.com\/?p=73","title":{"rendered":"Linking WordPress, Facebook Pages and Twitter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is an incredibly long blog post that shows how to link a Facebook Page to Twitter, and a WordPress Blog to a Facebook Page so that when you update your blog, it automatically updates your Facebook Page and your Twitter account.<\/p>\n<p>I had to do something similar for a client and decided it was cool enough to want to do a blog post about how to do this.<\/p>\n<p>This took a lot of experimenting to because there are so many different WordPress plugins and options to connect WordPress to Facebook or Twitter.\u00a0 Honestly, I think this is probably the easiest way.\u00a0 Here are the requirements that I followed:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Easy to learn and use, neither I nor my clients have lots of time to invest.<\/li>\n<li>Automatically update a Facebook Page and Twitter from WordPress<\/li>\n<li>Not update my personal Facebook profile, just my Facebook Page.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Seems simple enough, right?\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t.\u00a0 I think because of the number of plugins and options available.<\/p>\n<p>So, here&#8217;s what I did, with what I hope are fairly simple screenshots and steps to help those of you along inclined to do this. \u00a0Of course, if you want some professional help, feel free to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techivity.com\/contact-techivity\/\">contact<\/a> or call me (801-274-8490 is the office line ;-).<\/p>\n<p>These instructions are for linking a Facebook Page to Twitter, and then a blog to your Facebook Page.\u00a0 They are more oriented for a small business owner than for a personal blog.\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t have a Facebook Page, and you want one, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techivity.com\/uncategorized\/creating-a-facebook-page\/\" target=\"_self\">check out the post on creating a Facebook Page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First, get your Facebook Page talking to Twitter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This was pretty easy. \u00a0There&#8217;s a Twitter application that Facebook put together to link a Facebook Page to Twitter.\u00a0 It does not work to link a personal profile (you have to add it to a Facebook Page).<\/p>\n<p>So first, log into Facebook and open your Facebook Page (note that if you want your personal profile to talk to Twitter, you can add this application to your personal profile.\u00a0 These steps add it to your page.)<\/p>\n<p>Log in to Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure you have, or create a Facebook Page<\/p>\n<p>In the search bar up top, enter &#8220;Twitter&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The first link that comes up should be an application, click on it<\/p>\n<div>\n<dl id=\"attachment_100\">\n<dt><a href=\"http:\/\/www.techivity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/facebook-twitter-app.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"facebook-twitter-app\" src=\"http:\/\/www.techivity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/facebook-twitter-app.jpg\" alt=\"Search for &quot;Twitter&quot; on Facebook \" width=\"451\" height=\"341\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd>Select the Twitter App<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>Selecting the Twitter Facebook App will open the Twitter application page and you&#8217;ll have to select on the left side to add the app to your page.<\/p>\n<div>\n<dl id=\"attachment_101\">\n<dt><a href=\"http:\/\/www.techivity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/facebook-twitter-app2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"facebook-twitter-app2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.techivity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/facebook-twitter-app2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"212\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd>Click &#8220;Add to my page&#8221;<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>A web pop-up will open showing a list of pages in your Facebook account.\u00a0 Click &#8220;Add to Page&#8221; for each page you want to send its wall updates to Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Now you will need to navigate back to your Facebook Page and click on &#8220;Edit Page&#8221; in the upper left.<\/p>\n<p>Under the &#8220;Applications&#8221; area if you scroll down, you should see the Twitter Application, click &#8220;Edit&#8221; under the application and if you get the page asking to Allow the application, click the Allow button.<\/p>\n<p>This will open up a Twitter login screen within Facebook (if everything has gone well so far):<\/p>\n<div>\n<dl id=\"attachment_102\">\n<dt><a href=\"http:\/\/www.techivity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/twitter-in-facebook.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"twitter-in-facebook\" src=\"http:\/\/www.techivity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/twitter-in-facebook.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd>Log in to Twitter within Facebook<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>At this point you will have to allow the Connection in Twitter. You still need to allow your page into Twitter.<\/p>\n<div>\n<dl id=\"attachment_108\">\n<dt><a href=\"http:\/\/192.249.123.52\/~techiv6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/twitter-facebook-app1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"twitter-facebook-app\" src=\"http:\/\/192.249.123.52\/~techiv6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/twitter-facebook-app1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"205\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd>Click on the Facebook App in Twitter Connections<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>Once you are logged in to Twitter, click on &#8220;Settings&#8221; and then &#8220;Connections.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On the connections page, click on the Facebook app.<\/p>\n<p>The next page will show a Facebook logo with an arrow pointing to Twitter and a large green button that says &#8220;Link a Page to Twitter&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Click on the large green button.<\/p>\n<p>Again, a list of your Facebook Pages appears, with the pages on the left and a button &#8220;Link to Twitter&#8221; on the right.<\/p>\n<p>Click the &#8220;Link to Twitter&#8221; button for your page, which will open the options panel for the Twitter Facebook Application<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_111\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.techivity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/facebook-twitter-options.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-111\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-111 \" title=\"facebook-twitter-options\" src=\"http:\/\/www.techivity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/facebook-twitter-options.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"245\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-111\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Select the updates you want and click &quot;Save Changes&quot;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ok &#8212; Finally, you should be all set.\u00a0 Again, if this was confusing, and you want some help, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techivity.com\/contact-techivity\/\">don&#8217;t hesitate to contact me<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to double-check, you can go into Twitter, click on &#8220;Settings&#8221; and then click on &#8220;Connections.&#8221;\u00a0 If you see a Facebook connection notice there, with a &#8220;remove access&#8221; option, you&#8217;ve done it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Connect WordPress to your Facebook Page with Networked Blogs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now that we&#8217;ve finally got your Facebook Page updating Twitter, now we can connect your WordPress Blog to your FaceBook Page, for this we are going to use the Networked Blogs Facebook App.<\/p>\n<p>Again, go to your Facebook account and log in (or stay logged in) and in the search bar type &#8220;Networked Blogs&#8221; &#8211; the first one in the list, where it says &#8220;Applications&#8221; is what you want.<\/p>\n<div>\n<dl id=\"attachment_104\">\n<dt><a href=\"http:\/\/www.techivity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/facebook-networkedblogs1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"facebook-networkedblogs1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.techivity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/facebook-networkedblogs1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"146\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd>Click on the Networked Blogs application<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>That should open the application page, and on the left, you should see a link that says &#8220;Add to my Page&#8221; click on that link to open a web pop-up with a list of your pages.\u00a0 Click &#8220;Add to Page&#8221; for the page you want to link to WordPress.<\/p>\n<p>Now, go back to your page (click on the word &#8220;Facebook&#8221; in the upper left to go back to your home page and click &#8220;Ads and Pages&#8221; again), and click &#8220;Edit Page&#8221; on the left.<\/p>\n<p>Scroll down and look at the list of Applications.\u00a0 Networked Blogs should be on the list.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, you have to allow your blog permission to post to the wall, so click on &#8220;Application Settings&#8221; and open the &#8220;Additional Settings&#8221; tab and check the box that says &#8220;Publish recent activity to my wall.&#8221; and click &#8220;Ok&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Now we&#8217;re going to add your blog to Networked Blogs.\u00a0 Click &#8220;Edit&#8221; under the NetworkedBlogs Application.\u00a0 If you are following along with these instructions, this is probably the first time that you are running this, so you&#8217;ll have to Allow it access; if you get a page that starts with &#8220;Allow Access&#8221; click the button that says &#8220;Allow.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This should open the networked blogs setup page.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_118\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.techivity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/facebook-networkedblogs2.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-118\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-118\" title=\"facebook-networkedblogs2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.techivity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/facebook-networkedblogs2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"193\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-118\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Click Add Your Blog to networked blogs.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>You will get a form to fill in with information about your WordPress Blog.\u00a0 Fill out the information and click &#8220;Next&#8221;\u00a0 &#8211; if you get an offer to check out a promotional widget, you can (and should) uncheck that box and click the next button.<\/p>\n<p>NetworkedBlogs will ask if you are the author of the blog.\u00a0 Click &#8220;Yes&#8221; (assuming you are), now you have to go through a verification step.<\/p>\n<p>Choose to verify using the widget, open another browser window, log in to your WordPress blog and open &#8220;Appearance&#8221; and &#8220;Widgets&#8221;.\u00a0 Put a text widget on one of your side panels.<\/p>\n<p>Switch back to the networked blogs interface and from the &#8220;Copy the following HTML code&#8221; box, select everything, copy it, switch back to your blog and paste all that code into your text widget.\u00a0 Save the widget.<\/p>\n<p>Switch on back to the Networked Blogs interface and click &#8220;Verify Widget&#8221; &#8211; if you copied the code correctly, you should see a green box indicating you are verified.\u00a0 Click that &#8220;Next&#8221; button to show the NetworkedBlogs configuration page.<\/p>\n<p>We are ALMOST done here.\u00a0 ALMOST.\u00a0 This has been an incredibly long blog post, hasn&#8217;t it?\u00a0 In the future I think we&#8217;ll choose smaller topics \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>So here is the NetworkedBlogs page once you have it installed into your Facebook Account, and you&#8217;ve got a blog set up properly:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_123\" style=\"width: 452px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/192.249.123.52\/~techiv6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/networked-blogs-setup.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-123\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-123\" title=\"networked-blogs-setup\" src=\"http:\/\/192.249.123.52\/~techiv6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/networked-blogs-setup.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"442\" height=\"554\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.techivity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/networked-blogs-setup.jpg 442w, http:\/\/www.techivity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/networked-blogs-setup-239x300.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 442px) 100vw, 442px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-123\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Networked Blogs Interface<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ok, now you want to click on the right side where it says &#8220;Feed Settings&#8221; &#8211; this is the final step to syncing your blog with Facebook, and thus, with Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Once you click on &#8220;Feed Settings&#8221; you will see an interface listing all your Facebook Pages &#8211;
